High hopes, uncertain expectations

In this time where athletes do not know for certain when they will get back to normal, summer sports are still hoping to get their moment to shine.

The Xavier Baseball Team is the defending Class 3A state champion after defeating Central Dewitt by a score of 8-1 last year at Principal Park in Des Moines. However, there have been some roadblocks in their training.

“I haven’t been able to go to the gym so I have had to be resourceful and find stuff around the house to include in workouts since I do not have a home gym,” senior Nick Banowetz said. “For example, I have been using a case of water as weight.”

Banowetz said that the success of last year’s season will hopefully carry over to this year and motivate the team to be even better.

“We know what we need to do to be successful every day,” Banowetz said. “We can continue the good habits and get better everyday just like last year.”

The girl’s softball team is in the same situation. Junior Kya Loffswold also commented on how indoor practice facilities being closed has impacted her training.

“I have not been able to go to a softball field and take grounders because all the fields are closed,” Loffswold said. “St. Rita’s, the indoor hitting facility, is also closed, so I can’t hit the front toss right now either. It’s been very different, but I’m definitely trying to make the most out of this situation.”

Members of both teams are still working hard to help make sure they are ready whenever their season resumes. A decision will be made on June 1 if summer sports can begin their seasons.
