One individual state championship is not enough. Xavier senior Dale Weaver won an individual state championship in bowling last year but is not satisfied.
“I hope to not only repeat and win the individual state title, but I want us to win a team title as well,” Weaver said.
The Xavier boys’ bowling team won the district meet on Tuesday, February 18 qualifying for the state meet.
“I have always seen pictures around Xavier of teams holding up banners after qualifying for state,” Weaver said. “I have always wanted to get my picture up there with my team, holding that banner.”
Weaver has bowled four to five days a week for the last five months in order to prepare for this time of the season.
“With all of my hard work I feel prepared for the tournament,” Weaver said. “Plus, I know I have won an individual title once, so I know I can do it again.”
Head Coach Russ Camacho believes Weaver has been the anchor for the team and is someone the team can count on.
“He has really stepped up in his role as the team leader this year,” Camacho said. “He helps the other guys when they are struggling in matches and helps the team stay confident in the face of adversity.”
While Dale is an important member of the team, the other seniors; Jacob Tipton, Erik Triplett and Tyler Zogg have been guiding forces for the Xavier bowling program as well.
“These seniors have been a rock these last few years,” Camacho said. “We will miss their leadership and focus next year.”
Qualifying for the state meet means a lot to Zogg.
“I want to place in the top three individually and I want the team to bring home a ring because we have put in a lot of work,” Zogg said. “I will miss all of my great coaches, teammates and just relaxing and having fun with the boys.”
Camacho is very proud of his team and sees them as one of the best bowling teams in Xavier history.
The Xavier boys’ bowling team competed at the state tournament on Tuesday, February 25 at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo.
