A longstanding Xavier High School tradition is continuing to grow. On February 6, math teacher Mrs. Bridget Lemker received recognition at the Cedar Rapids West Rotary Educator Appreciation Awards held at the African American History Museum. Cedar Rapids West Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards, and build good will and peace in the world.

Each year, Xavier is allowed to nominate one teacher that exemplifies Rotary’s message of outstanding work and positive impacts. Mrs. Lemker was nominated for this award by the principal of Xavier, Ms. Angela Olson. Ms. Olson nominated Mrs. Lemker for her outstanding work in teaching, leadership in cross country, track, National Honor Society, and Business Professionals of America.

“Mrs. Lemker is an outstanding teacher that is willing to help any student or teacher,” Ms. Olson said. “Her positive attitude in all that she does is a great model for what we love to see in everyone at Xavier.”

At this meeting, Ms. Olson shared her thoughts on what makes Mrs. Lemker such a great teacher. In her speech, she talked about Mrs. Lemker’s classroom, how each student is involved and engaged. She also mentioned Mrs. Lemker’s work ethic between taking extra time with AP students and her work with other teachers.

This award recognizes the work of one teacher from each Cedar Rapids high school.

“It is nice to know that others appreciate what you do as a teacher,” Lemker said.

Lemker was honored to receive this award and join the other teachers who have received this recognition. She is happy to keep this Xavier tradition alive.
