Many people perceive Cedar Rapids as pretty boring, but if you are looking for the perfect date night or a fun thing to do with friends, support local theaters. For a relatively low cost, you can support local artists and go to live theatere here in Cedar Rapids. The Cedar Rapids area has many community theaters. Here are just a few of the shows that will be showing at Theatre Cedar Rapids in the upcoming months.

Elf the Musical : 

November 16- December 16, 2018 

Based off the 2003 Will Ferrell movie of the same name, Elf the Musical focuses on the life of Buddy Hobbs, who has been raised in the North Pole as an elf. Buddy eventually finds out he is not an elf – he is human. Buddy leaves the North Pole in an attempt to find his real dad. He quickly realizes New York City is nothing like Santa’s workshop. Elf the musical  is rated G and is a family-friendly holiday show that will have everyone in your family laughing.

Shakespeare in Love :

March 8-24, 2019

Following the fictionalized romance of Viola De Lesseps and writer William Shakespeare, Shakespeare in Love is based off the Oscar-winning movie of the same name. Shakespeare faces a wall of writer’s block and looks to his new love for inspiration. Unknown to him De Lesseps is posing as a man to be in one of his plays. Shakespeare in Love is rated R for sexual content and language.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame :

May 3-25, 2019

This musical is based off the 1996 Disney rendition. Quasimodo is a hunchback taken in by Claude Frollo, who has lived inside the Notre Dame bell tower his entire life. He yearns to see what the outside world is like, so he gathers the courage to leave the tower. While in the streets of France he meets the compassionate gypsy, Esmeralda. She shows him kindness for the first time in his life, and he becomes infatuated with her. This beautiful story, accompanied by a swelling musical score, is one show you will not want to miss.
