The goal of Model UN is to build students’ leadership potential, practice debate skills, and learn more about the foreign relations of the government. Xavier students were provided the opportunity to do this through a simulation of an United Nations meeting.

The Saints created presentations on several different countries covering many diverse world issues. After months of preparation, a small group of Xavier’s Model UN students, selected by moderator Mr. Matt Farrell, gathered at The University of Northern Iowa on April 5 and 6. They divided into several groups which represented multiple countries. Xavier and other schools from the state presented concerns about their countries and the solutions to those issues during the simulation.

Juniors Garrett Coester, Evan Lemker, and Grant Schnoebelen were eager to learn from their experiences.

“I gained a better idea of how countries cooperate on an international stage and how to express ideas diplomatically,” Schnoebelen said.

Coester, Lemker, and Schnoebelen represented Greece’s general assembly. In this assembly, they discussed the political and security issues between the nations.

“I thought it was a great privilege to be able to not only represent Xavier at Model UN, but to also represent students who want to learn more about the government,” Lemker said. “Being able to be a part of the assembly showed me how much work and thought goes into keeping our country functioning.”

This conference is geared at educating students about the ins and outs of the government’s foreign affairs, but this is not its only purpose. It also serves as a time to relax and create relationships with students from different schools across the state.

“Most enjoyable is the dance party because there are actually some Model UN hotties,” Lemker said. “Creating memories and jokes with the other students is a great break from the stress of school.”

Preparation for next year’s Model UN will start at the beginning of next school year. The conference is projected to be near the same time next April.
