2018 is for the girls

“Saturdays are for the boys.” You may have seen this slogan on flags, shirts, mugs, hats, and on Twitter. Girlfriends all over the world have been told by their boyfriends, “they just need a night with the bros.” But, after receiving daily snapchats from my sister, Emma, with the caption, “2018 is for the girls,” I’ve realized she’s right. Girls deserve not just a day, but a whole year.

Some of you are probably sitting here thinking “how can I make this my year?” Well, let me tell you three simple ideas you can incorporate to make this the year of the girls.

1. Have a girls’ night. Some of my favorite nights in high school have been with my girls. The keys to girls’ nights are lots of laughs, car rides, and plenty of queso. My girls’ night would not be complete without Audrey putting her head into a lamp or Julia and Emily having a handstand competition. Girls’ night can be done anywhere; the Xavier parking lot, in a car, or at a house. Make sure to do this at least once throughout the weekend.

2. Make a group chat. Most inside jokes, secrets, and plans are made here. “Grandma Jan’s” group chat is already taken after a night of camping in my Grandma’s backyard. So, think of a name that means something to your friend group. Make sure to share about your day and ask your friends about theirs. This is the best way to stay in touch and make the most of the time apart from your friends.

3. Go the extra mile. Remember, this year is for all the girls, not just your friends. Comment on a girl’s picture who you don’t see as often, invite a girl from math class to breakfast, or go out of your way to compliment any girl of any grade in the hallway.

The mindset of 2018 being for girls can go past this year. Of course there’s more than three ways to make this our year: take time for yourself, practice self-love, and take personal days. Ladies, take charge of this year and make it your own. 2018 is indeed for the girls.
