Saints stay grounded
October 4, 2017
Staying humble when having success is the key with every great sports team and every great sports season, according to the Xavier Saints football team. The team is looking to continue this after the great success they have experienced so far in their season. The Saints, still undefeated after their 37-0 victory over Independence last Friday, are enjoying their victories, but say they are extremely focused on staying humble, the same as every year.
“We know that everyone wants to beat us,”senior defensive back Brandon Serovy said. “We just try and work as hard as we can at practice every day so we are prepared for every game that comes our way.”
After so much success every year for the Saints program, many might see how it would be easy to rest on the laurels of past success and become complacent. Instead, fans of the team continue to see success every single year. When asked how they achieve this, senior running back Jax Junge gave Head Coach Duane Schulte much of the credit for keeping them hungry.
“After every game coach tells us to enjoy the win, but be ready to come back Monday and get back to work,”Junge said. “He always is telling us to stay hungry and not be satisfied with just a win.”
This attitude has evidently taken hold of the entire program, with losing seasons very hard to come across in the record books for the Saints. Also missing from those record books, with the exception of 2006 and 2013, is state titles. With many extremely successful seasons, to say that the lack of state titles is surprising is an understatement. Senior cornerback Justin Schneider looks at this missing end product as further motivation.
“I think that we realize that even though we have had success, we have never been perfect which is what we always work towards at the end of the day,”Schneider said. “We all want a state title, and are convinced that if we stay sharp, we can be successful.”
The Saints will continue to work towards staying grounded and a state title when they take on undefeated Waverly-Shell Rock for their homecoming game this coming Friday, October 6th.
