Denman finds new love
September 19, 2017
An underdog, a newbie, a newcomer. These are just a few words to describe sophomore Hannah Denman. As the 2017 girls’ cross country season begins, the team is led by this unlikely sophomore. As a first-timer to cross country, Denman has placed well in her first few meets, but continues to look to improve her time as she learns how to race properly.
The sweet taste of the 3000 meter race in track was just the push this sophomore needed to embark on her first ever cross country season. Going into lifting and training, no one expected Denman to come out on top. She quickly turned heads after amplified pressure from teammates pushed her to be the best.
“During a race, I like to repeat the phrase ‘Who wants it more?’ over in my head,” Denman said. “Oftentimes, I am the one one who wants ‘it’ more. Whether ‘it’ is a faster time, to beat the girl in front of me, or to push to the top of the hill and the next one after that.”
For most, motivation comes from the desire to win, but Denman looks further into the future, not just as what is on the surface.
“I am also motivated to get better because I could go to state. At state there are recruiters, and with recruiters come scholarships,” Denman said.
Along with getting a college offer, Denman has big goals in mind for herself and the team.
“As a team we are always striving to get better. Personally, my goals are to run a sub 20 minute 5k, complete a marathon, and most importantly, push myself to be the best runner I can be every day,” Denman said.
These passions and goals are shared by every member of the team.
“Our goal is to beat your last week’s self,” junior captain, Bridget Schmitt said. “We are just trying to drop time and hopefully get fast enough to compete competitively.”
Denman looks to her lucky wing necklace to bring the team good luck in their upcoming meets. Whether it is luck or pure talent, it is certain that Hannah Denman will soon be a name to remember.
The Saints will race again at the Eastern Iowa Classic on Thursday, September 21, once again led by Denman.
