Life lessons from Shania

Claire Delany, A&E Assistant Editor

“When everything is goin’ wrong, don’t worry, it won’t last for long.” If you walked into the Delaney house 15 years ago, you would have seen three little girls running around the house pretending to dance while screaming at the top of their lungs to Shania Twain. You would have seen our parents as the “audience.” My mom made sure Shania Twain was a part of my life by blaring it throughout our house. Listening to the lyrics has taught me three big life lessons.
“The best thing about being a woman is the prerogative to have a little fun.” As a girl, you have so much going on in your daily life. This lyric reminds us all that we could use more fun every day. In “Man! I feel like a Woman!”, we are all told to go out, have a good time, and be in the moment. This is something we often seem to forget. Women need to be reminded that we are all amazing and we need the chance to show that.
“Don’t worry, it won’t last for long, Yeah, it’s all gonna come around.” This lyric is from one of my all time favorites, “Up!”. Shania Twain makes fun of herself in this song to prove we all need to take the bad days less seriously. We all get so caught up in life that we forget we need to laugh and enjoy each day. Shania Twain explains in this particular song that life cannot always go our way and we must accept it.
“Stop overreacting. You even get suspicious when I paint my nails. It’s definitely distracting. The way you dramatize every little small detail.” Shania Twain understands you need to know when to get out of a relationship. This song is “Don’t be Stupid”. The underlying meaning is if your relationship or friendship is not what you want, then you must take a step back to figure out what you need.
I have learned no matter what, there is always a song to go with what you need to hear. When I listen to Shania Twain, I do not always realize what advice I was looking for until the end of the song. She has had a song for every heartbreak, family issue, or mistake I have made. Her music has inspired me to try and be my most confident self. You can try and prove me wrong, but until you listen to her music, you will not realize what Shania Twain can offer you. Even if you don’t like Shania’s style of music, there is always a lyric that will jump out at you. So thank you to my mom for starting off my childhood right with Shania Twain and her valuable life lessons.
