Junior golfer Brad Karpick won Player of the Year honors in the Mississippi Division golf meet September 26, at Finkbine in Iowa City. Karpick had shot rounds of 78, 78, and 79 for a 54-hole total of 235, beating junior Drew Brandel of Linn-Mar by one shot.

“It felt great winning with all of the pressure that I was under,” Karpick said. “It also gave me confidence in my game that I can play well under tough conditions.”

Karpick is looking forward to being a senior leader next year. During his senior year, Karpick plans to stay focused and work toward his final goal of competing at the state meet. To achieve this, he is going to keep working throughout the off season by competing around the Midwest in different tournaments.

“I want to lead next year like our seniors led this year. They held us to a higher standard and if we weren’t at that standard, they made it known,” Karpick said.

Coach Tim O’Brien is proud of how the boys competed throughout the season. He is looking forward to having four of the top boys returning to the team with experience coming into next year.

“Even though we overall didn’t have the best performance of the season at districts, I was very proud how they never gave up. Our six players went 6-under-par on their last hole. Combined they had an eagle, four birdies, and a par,” O’Brien said. “I am confident that the four returners will be even better next year.”

The Saints got seventh out of 14 teams at districts which was held at Pheasant Ridge in Cedar Falls on October 4. Junior Ryan Keating led the Saints with a 9-over-par 81. Following Keating were sophomore Nick Recker and senior Tyler Breitbach, who both shot an 82. Karpick, senior Sam Martin, and sophomore Dan Bailey shot 83, 86 and 91 respectively.

Along with Player of the Year, Karpick also received First Team All Conference and Second Team All Metro honors. Keating, Recker and Breitbach all received Second Team All Conference, while Martin received Honorable Mention.
